Whanganui’s “Good News” paper since 1985
River City Press was established in 1985 by Andrew Plimmer and Leslie Saywood as Whanganui’s first free community paper.
The first office was next to the Dublin St Service Station, behind the old TAB. Each week the paper was pasted up by hand and printed by Stratford Press and Printing Co.
Rhonda Ander later took over as owner and editor, and the paper moved to premises in Ingestre St, then to a revamped old building in Ridgway St.
In 1997 Debbie and Blair Jarrett bought River City Press. After a spell at 37 Taupo Quay, it settled at its current home at 52 Ingestre Street. Computers have long since replaced the knife and cutting boards.
As Editor, Debbie Jarrett looks after the paper’s professional image. Blair uses his graphic design skills to create adverts for clients and keep the business up to date with modern technology.
